Temptation is one of the greatest obstacles to overcome and temptation has destroyed many good men. Great men such as King David and Sampson were overcome by temptation. The good thing about temptation is that you have a CHOICE. You can let circumstances dictate your outcome or let someone make the decision for you; but you will suffer the consequences. Both David and Sampson had something to loose. David asked God to not take a way His Holy Spirit and Sampson lost his strength, because he revealed his secret. You will loose your power as well if you yield to sinful pleasure. Temptation is no respect of persons and it does not discriminate against any one. You can’t get around temptation but you can overcome it by the power of the Holy Spirit. Every time you are tempted, God gives you a way out. You must choose to follow His lead. The Tempter (devil) preys on your weakness. When you are tempted you must trust God. God knows your weakness and He will strengthen you in the time of temptation. In the bible (KJV), I Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.” In the time of temptation don’t compromise your faith. You must depend on the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He did compromise with the devil. But He reminded the devil of God’s commandments. In the bible, St. Matthew 4:3-4, “And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” When the devil cannot deceive you with one thing, he will come with a different strategy. Be careful! The devil knows that you would like to have the things of this world. Then he tempts the Lord to jump of the pinnacle of the temple. By saying, “If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angles charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God.” Then the devil will offer you gifts in exchange for worship, he seeks worship of all men. Then he offers the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them to the Lord. Verse 9, “And he said unto him, All of these things will I give you thee, if thou will fall down and worship me. Then said Jesus unto him, Get the hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thy serve.” We must hold on to God’s Unchanging Hand and remember the words of the song writer that said, “yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin. Each victory will help you some other to win fight manfully onward. Dark passion subdue, look ever to Jesus, He will carry you through.”
